Ten Blazers named All-Gulf South Conference

VALDOSTA — Ten Valdosta State football players have been named All-Gulf South Conference, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.

Six of the 10 players garnered first-team honors, led by senior linebacker Chris Pope, who became the became the 47th player in GSC history, and the first since 2009, to be named first-team All-GSC three times in their career.

Pope led Valdosta State with 92 tackles on the season, including 6.0 tackles for loss. He became the Gulf South Conference's all-time leader in tackles during the year as he finished his career with 372.

Pope was joined on the first team defense by senior defensive tackle Lawrence Virgil, who moved from the second-team in 2012 to the first-team this year. Virgil recorded 48 tackles on the season, including a team-high 8.5 tackles for loss. He recorded 4.5 tackles on the year and forced three fumbles.

Senior cornerback Dominique Wheeler also garnered first-team honors. Wheeler registered 16 tackles on the year and intercepted four passes, two of which he returned for touchdowns. He also broke up five passes and scooped up a fumble, which he returned 86 yards for a touchdown.

On offense, senior wide receiver Seantavius Jones garnered first-team honors for the second straight season.

Jones led Valdosta State in all receiving categories on the year as he caught 55 passes for 777 yards and 13 touchdowns. Jones set a new GSC record with six touchdown catches against Delta State this season and finished the year in the top five in the GSC in all major receiving categories.

He was joined on the first-team offense by sophomore running back Cedric O'Neal, who garnered first-team honors for the second time in his career. O’Neal was second in the GSC with 975 rushing yards on the season as well as with 97.5 yards per game. He also scored six touchdowns on the season while averaging 7.0 yards per rush.

The final first-team honoree was sophomore punter Dominic DeMasi.

DeMasi punted 47 times on the year for an average of 39.9 yards per punt. He had a long punt of 63 yards on the season and had eight punts carry more than 50 yards on the season. On the year, he tallied 19 punts that landed inside an opponent's 20 yard line.

Of the six first team honorees, Jones, Virgil and Pope were all unanimous choices.

Two offensive players made second-team All-GSC as senior wide receiver Regginald Lewis and junior offensive guard Felei Tuavae both garnered the honor.

Lewis was second on the VSU team with 47 receptions and 531 yards on the year and caught three touchdowns while running for one more. Meanwhile, Tuavae started all 10 games in his first year with the Blazers and tallied a team-high 32 knockdown blocks.

On defense, senior linebacker Jeremy Grable and junior defensive end Tevin Davis both garnered second-team honors.

 Grable, who was first-team All-GSC last year, registered 88 tackles on the year, including 7.0 tackles for loss. He also intercepted two passes, both of which he returned for touchdowns, and recovered three fumbles while breaking up two passes and forcing a fumble.

Meanwhile, Davis had 16 tackles on the season, despite missing all of one game and all but one play of a second due to injury. A second-team All-GSC honoree in 2012, Davis had 6.0 tackles for loss on the yeara dn broke up one pass while recovering a fumble, which he returned 56 yards for a touchdown.
