Valdosta State Volleyball tames West Alabama Tigers, 3-1

VALDOSTA — The Valdosta State Blazer volleyball team turned out a solid performance on Tuesday night at the Complex, defeating Gulf South Conference opponent West Alabama 3-1.

Valdosta State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a 25-20 victory in set one, but allowed the Tigers to tie the match up after falling in set two, 25-18.

The Blazers were able to regain momentum in the third set, however, and finished off West Alabama with 25-22 and 25-20 wins in sets three and four.

West Alabama delivered a .252 hitting percentage on the night with four players swinging for an average of .333 or higher, but the Blazers weathered the Tigers' offensive storm and managed to put together an impressive offensive output of their own.

Leading the attack for VSU was Destiny Berry, who blistered 14 kills in 21 attacks with no errors, which resulted in a season high .667 hitting percentage for the junior.

Berry also made her presence known at the net on defense with two blocks in the contest, one of which was a solo effort.

As a team, the Blazers connected for 69 kills, their highest mark of the year, along with 62 digs and six blocks.

Valdosta State finished the day with a .278 hitting percentage to round out their offensive numbers on the night.

With the win, Valdosta State maintained their spot near the top of the GSC rankings with a 16-9 overall record, 8-4 in league play. The Tigers fell to 9-14 overall, 2-10 in conference play.

The Blazers will hit the road once again for three more matches, starting with Lee in Cleveland, Tenn. this Friday at 7 p.m.

Following the three game road stint, Valdosta State will return home for the final four matches of their regular season schedule.
