Football Briefs

VALDOSTA — Brooks County Trojans (0-0) at Clinch County Panthers (0-0)

Brooks County players are itching to put their pads on and get to work, however one Trojan will not suit up on Friday. Deric Herring will not play against Clinch County; Herring is suspended for the game as a result of being ejected after an altercation on the sideline during last week’s scrimmage. With Herring suspended, other players will have to step up to replace his production at wideout and in the return game.

Coach’s Take: “We’re looking for the offense to be an up-tempo offense, fast paced. We want to see if we can really push some people off of the football and I’d like to see Malcom throw the ball well,” said Brooks head coach Maurice Freeman. “Defensively, we’ve got to team tackle extremely well. I feel like we should be pretty decent on special teams.”

Valwood Valiants (0-0) at Windsor Academy Knights (0-0)

Valwood opens up their title defense against the Windsor Knights who will be looking to run an option out of a split-backfield. When going against teams that run an option, sticking to one’s assignment on defense is key. The Valiants will have to balance smart, assignment, football with their desire to be violent when they reach the ball carrier and to create turnovers.

Coach’s Take: “I want to come out fast. This team is kind of setting the bar high and we want to reach for it,” said Valwood head coach Ashley Henderson. “We want to come out smoking from first play on, not have a little lull out there. We want to play assignments, but if we make a mistake, let’s make it fast.”

Lanier County Bulldogs (0-0) at Atkinson County Rebels (0-0)

After fumbling the ball six times during a sloppy scrimmage in the rain last week, ball security is the number one priority for the Bulldogs as they face the Rebels. Lanier County also needs to be better up front offensively than they were a week ago if they want to stay balanced as an offense. Atkinson did not scrimmage last week and the Rebels’ new coach, Kip Hall has been very quiet about his schemes both offensively and defensively so this should be an exciting game to watch.
