Clinch outlasts Turner Co. in 3OTs

HOMERVILLE — Clinch County won a triple overtime thriller 30-28 against Turner County to stay undefeated in the region.

CCHS improved to 7-3 overall and 6-0 in its region while TCHS fell to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the region.

CCHS had trouble moving the ball against the Rebels but were able to stay in the game thanks to five Rebel turnovers, one of which resulting in an 80-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by the Panthers.

It was the only score of the first half by the Panthers.

In turn, the Panthers had five turnovers of their own coupled with 10 penalties for 80 yards.

"I thought we were sleep walking in the first half," CCHS head coach Jim Dickerson said. "Football is a game of momentum and we never established any momentum in the first half. (The turnovers) are something that should happen in week one, not in week 10. I don't think we have had five turnovers in the last five games."

Despite a slow start, Coach Dickerson was proud of his players for the way they battled the entire game.

"Both teams played inspired," Coach Dickerson said. "(TCHS) brought out the best in us, and we certainly brought out the best in them... (However), we have to get disciplined if we want to have a legitimate shot at running the table here."

One player that turned it up in the second half and overtimes was junior Octavis Johnson.

Johnson rushed the ball 24 times for 153 yards and three touchdowns.

"First of all, I want to thank the line for blocking good tonight," Johnson said. "Everybody came together and we scored a touchdown to win the game."

Coach Dickerson was thankful for the performance Johnson had in the game.

"(Johnson) ran the ball very hard," Coach Dickerson said. "We kind of go as (Johnson) goes a lot of times and he had a big night tonight."

CCHS now has a week off before playoffs begin.

"I'm proud of our players tonight, our fans, just the whole Panther nation," Coach Dickerson said.
