VALDOSTA — The Lowndes Vikings are playing their best football of the season which has them in the midst of a three-game win streak over three tough region opponents with the Tift County Blue Devils 4-4, (1-3) coming into town.

What a difference three weeks make in a season.

Not too long ago the Vikings were coming off a sound defeat at the hands of the Colquitt Packers that left them at 3-2 and 0-1 in the region, but since Lowndes has found the strength through each other to make another strong push at the end of the season.

Tift County, on the other hand, have lost three straight region games after toppling Coffee County on Sept. 27 and have now lost 13 of their past 14 region games.

The Blue Devils have played tough in each of their losses, dropping four games by an average of 8.25 points.

The quest for Tift County’s second region victory is not going to be any easier this week.

Lowndes will be back at Martin Stadium after going on the road last week and soundly defeating the same Coffee County Trojans.

The entire Vikings team is coming together after a bit of mid-season turbulence and their play reflects that.

Each week it seems that a different side of the ball will step up and earn Lowndes a win.

Three weeks ago the Vikings offense matched Brunswick score for score in a wild 38-30 victory on the road.

Two weeks ago, in the Winnersville Classic — you may have heard of it — Lowndes’ defense came up huge and they were able to pull out a 3-0 win in a defensive battle.

Then a week ago, Lowndes again went to the road and put together possibly their most complete games of the season.

After a slow first half in which the Vikings trailed 10-7, Lowndes’ offensive line was dominant in second half as they rolled up 203 yards, all on the ground. Eric Hart also picked off two passes, returning one for a touchdown as Lowndes picked up their third region win 35-10.

Dyshon Sims and Lowndes’ offensive line should be able to control the line of scrimmage once again which will lead to a lot of yards on the ground for Jerome Daniels, Alex Brown, and the rest of the backs.

Zack Copeland and company on the defensive line will face a bit of a challenge against the Blue Devils offensive unit.

Tift County features Vanderbilt recruit Ike Powell along with J.C. Clark, and Sam Dunn up front; combined with the senior leadership of quarterback Ryan Wedgeworth and backs LaDarius Stewart and Gunnar Schemmel, the Blue Devils will test the Vikings.

Unfortunately, Lowndes head coach Randy McPherson could not be reached for comment.

Kick-off is at 8 p.m. at Martin Stadium. The game can also be heard on 99.5 fm.
