Georgia Christian soccer defeats Valwood at home

DASHER — The Georgia Christian Generals battled through 80 minutes of back and forth action to defeat the Valwood Valiants 3-2 on their home field on Thursday. With two scores in the last 4 minutes of the match, both teams knew it was their game to win.

Alex King gave the Generals their first lead of the game on a goal with only two minutes gone from the clock. Soon Kim added the Generals other two scores, both in the second half, including the game winning goal with a little under three minutes left.

“We did a much better job possessing the ball and combining, especially through the middle third of the field. We’ve finished games well through the season and Valwood did a great job tonight passing the ball, we just needed that extra pass and we got it, and the win,” said Georgia Christian coach Willis Colston.

As for the Valiants, the team never gave up in the game, even with the game going down to the final seconds, the Valiants did not quit.

“The biggest thing I want out of my guys is for them to give it all they can for 80 minutes and work hard for every ball. We are a young team that needs more experience at a varsity level, but our seniors pull us through and our young guys learn from them,” said Valwood coach Chad Gallahan. “We didn’t give up tonight. Being down 2-1, our senior captain Gabe Garcia ripped a great shot to put us 2-2 but we just have to finish.”

While the Generals were able to come up with the victory, Coach Colston still knows that his team has more work to do.

“We have to get better at keeping the ball and being patient. We can do a lot and not get greedy on long kicks. We have to keep finishing,” said Colston.

Standing 3-0 in the region, the Generals have a short turn around before their next game today at 6 p.m against Tift Area Academy.

“We play Tift Area at home and it’s always a big game for us even though it’s not a region game. We take on Valwood next week.”

When the Generals play the Valiants next Thursday, they will travel to Hahira, taking on a Valwood team that will celebrate its Senior Night during the game.
