Cargile makes U.S. Barefoot Water Ski Team

VALDOSTA — Chandler Cargile is a barefoot water skier from Valdosta that can frequently be seen skiing early morning and late afternoons in Long Pond.

“He is always looking for the smooth water,” said parents Mark and Beth Cargile.

Although barefooting competitively for only three years, he has risen in the ranks quickly.

According to Ben Groen, a coach at World Barefoot Center, “Chandler is ranked second overall going into the Worlds, with a good shot at winning the World Championship in March 2014.”

Cargile is currently ranked 23rd overall in the world in Open Men’s division.

Last month the U.S. Barefoot Water Ski Team selections were announced for 2014.

The teams will compete at the Barefoot Water Ski World Championships in Mulwala, Australia in March. Cargile has been appointed to two teams, the Junior Team and Elite Team.

The Junior Team consists of three team members, all of the age of 16 or younger.

The Elite Team, known as the “Best of the Best,” regardless of age, consists of seven team members. Cargile is the youngest member of the Elite Team.

“It is such an honor to be appointed to the US Team, but to be appointed to ski on two teams is just beyond belief,” said Cargile.

He was also a member of the 2012 Junior Barefoot Water Ski Team at only 16 years old, and he has already qualified to ski in “Open Pro” division.

Competing at the National competition this past September in California, Cargile won the gold medal in Open Men’s Jump with a jump measuring 22.4 meters.

Cargile says he enjoys meeting and skiing with people from all over the world and has made lasting friendships.
