Back to the Future

Georgia Christian School starts football anew

Dasher —  TitleTown has been growing bigger each year. With new football  programs blossoming across the region, South Georgia prepares to add a new team to the mix.

The Georgia Christian School Generals have not had a football program at their school since the 1960s. During the past few decades, the school has been known for an impressive basketball program.

The new GCS football team will feature 24 players, as they chase their goal of a winning first season.

The Generals will play in their first scrimmage this Friday in Athens. They will face off against Monsignor Donovan High School, which is also a first-year program.

The new team will run a spread offense similar to that of Valdosta State’s offense and will be led by offensive coordinator James Carter and Head Coach Kent Copeland.

On defense, the team will operate out of a 3-4. Due to only having 24 players, players will be asked to fill roles on both sides of the ball to help pull off wins.

The team will play its first regular season game in Cordele against Crisp Academy on Aug. 22.

The Generals open their first open game against area football powerhouse, the Valwood Valiants, on Sept. 5.

The new team will lean on sophomore Cole Copeland as quarterback to garnish some wins this season. Other Georgia Christian players to watch will be Jerry Beverly at wide receiver and linebacker in addition to Sherrod Bell on the defensive line and Christian Wiesenbaker also starting at linebacker.

The new team has been well received so far by the community and coaches are excited to be bringing more opportunity to the city.

“The main thing is, this is Winnnersville. It's an opportunity for us to give the City of Valdosta a school where all the kids can get a chance to play. We are all about building better players, on and off the field,” said special teams coach Ryan Warren.

While the team hopes to grow in the future, the Generals will only play a junior varsity schedule this season, due to having no seniors on the roster.
