VSU Welcomes new FCA Director

VALDOSTA —

VALDOSTA — The Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Valdosta State University has a new director. Shane Goodwin has been meeting with VSU coaches and the athletic community as a whole since January to establish a relationship with the community.
Officially hired on June 1, Goodwin has the task of growing the FCA on VSU campus. The goal of the FCA is to be the “heart and soul” of sports. Founded in 1954, the FCA reaches players and coaches by using sports to impact the world for Jesus Christ.
“As we went through the process of trying to find the right fit for VSU, it became apparent that God was leading us to Shane and leading Shane to us,” said Brad Lane, South Georgia Multi Area Director for the FCA.
In his short stint as director thus far, Goodwin has secured over $30,000 in donations and funding for the VSU FCA.
Goodwin comes with 11 years of teaching experience and 16 years of football coaching experience in Alabama, Tennessee, and even California. He is from Oneonta, Ala. and he and his wife Shanel have four daughters.
As campus director, Goodwin will work with a team of chaplains,  meet with coaches and athletes weekly, establish bible studies, provide resources and have appointments with the players to keep them encouraged through Christ.
His plans for VSU include the hiring of a chaplain for each team at VSU that wants one. Goodwin also plans to reach every single athlete on campus, and does not want to let anyone slip in between the cracks.
“We want to reach all 400 plus athletes and even the coaches,” said Goodwin. “Doesn’t matter the religious affiliation, or the race. Our job isn’t to judge, but to minister.”
“If something tragic happens to an athlete through the school year, and we aren’t able to minister to them, then I will feel like I am not doing my job,” Goodwin also added.

  • LeBron: I'm coming back to Cleveland

Before anyone ever cared where I would play basketball, I was a kid from Northeast Ohio. It’s where I walked. It’s where I ran. It’s where I cried. It’s where I bled. It holds a special place in my heart. People there have seen me grow up. I sometimes feel like I’m their son. Their passion can be overwhelming. But it drives me. I want to give them hope when I can. I want to inspire them when I can. My relationship with Northeast Ohio is bigger than basketball. I didn’t realize that four years ago. I do now.
