Class 6A East Sectional Conference begins at Lowndes

VALDOSTA — The Class AAAAAA sectional wrestling tournament kicked off Friday at Lowndes High School. Twenty-five schools traveled to participate including local schools Valdosta High and Colquitt County, in addition to participants from Lowndes.

Lowndes had nine wrestlers - Jaacquavious Johnson, Robbie Powell, Davis Ison, Carl Jackson, Matthew Moody, Byrd Ison, Russell Byington, Austin Ogburn and Caleb Fudge - participate in the first round.  They combined to put the Vikings in sixth place with 17 points heading into today's conclusion of the sectional meet.

Ison won his match at 145 pounds by forfeit against Julio Urbina from Centennial High. Moody was able to secure a victory against Mark Werner from Lambert High with a technical fall win in the 160-pound class. Byington moved to the next round of the tournament after his pin of Tyler Crawford of South Forsyth at 182. Ogburn also moved on to the next round with a technical fall victory against Jaulil Rash from Rockdale High in the 195-pound class. Closing for the Vikings was Fudge, who won by decision against Isaiah Kim of South Forsyth.

With eight wrestlers - Cameron Warren, Mason Schmitt, Reginald Dennis, Andrew Bradshaw, Markus Norman, Deion Williams, Jarvese Gilliard and Julian Fraiser - VHS had 15 points to put them in eighth place at the end of the first day of the tournament.

Warren got a win by decision against Benjamin Preal of Luella in the 109-pound class. Schmitt won by decision against Josh Dominguez of Grayson High at 120. Dennis got a win by fall against Andrew Huling of Luella in the 126-pound class.

Bradshaw won by major decision against Julius Mantuano of Luella High in the 132-pound class. Team captain of the 'Cats wrestling squad, Gilliard won by decision against South Forsyth’s River Faulkner at 170. Wrapping up the first day was Fraiser who got a victory against Sekou Nicholson of Grayson at 285.

Leading at the end of the first day was Archer with 55 points with Camden County in second with 50 points. The second day of the tournament begins today at 8 a.m.
