Vikings, Trojans test each other in 7-on-7

VALDOSTA —  The high school football season may still be two months away, but that didn’t stop Brooks County and Lowndes from taking advantage of an opportunity to get better Wednesday morning.

Working together in a 7-on-7 passing league at Martin Stadium, both the Trojans and Vikings got the chance to test themselves against a talented opponent.

“We come over here twice a year during the summer and Lowndes has a great team,” Brooks coach Maurice Freeman said. “We’ll see who is playing the way we think they should be playing.”

Facing quality competition — Lowndes is coming off a 9-4 season and a berth in the Class AAAAAA state quarterfinal round, while Brooks won 12 games for the second straight season and advanced to the Class AA semifinal round last year — for close to two hours, though, also highlights some deficiencies. That is something both coaches welcomed as well.

“This kind of stuff here does get you better,” Lowndes coach Randy McPherson said. “We just come out here and basically just practice against them.

“I saw some good things but we’ve still got a long way to go.”

Added Freeman: “They’ve got a bunch of players and they’re going to try and wear us down and get us tired because we don’t have the numbers they have. And that’s great. It lets us see where our weaknesses are, and we can see what we need to build on.”

The 7-on-7 workouts throughout the summer also provides an opportunity for the Trojans to fill some of the holes left by the graduation of the likes of Malkom Parrish — who signed with Georgia — and Deric Herring — who signed with Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College.

“We don’t have a Malkom Parrish but Demontay Jones is doing a great job for us and he’s working like crazy,” Freeman said. “We like what we see.”
