Valdosta, Johns Creek to decide semifinalist in Game 3

VALDOSTA — One week after pitching and hitting Valdosta High into the Class AAAAAA quarterfinal round, Seth Shuman did his part in helping put the Wildcats one win away from a semifinal berth Tuesday. It would be the first semifinal appearance for Valdosta since 2008.

Shuman threw a complete game for the second straight start and delivered a key hit for the second straight game as VHS beat host Johns Creek 3-1 in the series opener. The Gladiators rebounded for a 12-5 win in the second game of the best-of-3 series to force today's third game, which starts at 3 p.m.

Valdosta jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener as senior Daniel Tefft singled in David Posas before Shuman added an RBI single with the bases loaded. While the Wildcats were unable to bust the game open, it was already enough for Shuman, who kept Johns Creek off balance after blanking McEachern on three hits a week ago.

Logan Stephens also had a key hit in the first game win for the Wildcats, who are now 23-9. Johns Creek (19-12) scored its lone in the final inning.

Valdosta was unable to finish off the sweep, though, as they fell behind early and trailed 8-0 in the third.

It won't be the first time Valdosta has faced a must-win game in these playoffs as the Wildcats split the first two games against Newnan in the opening round before edging the host Cougars 5-4 in the third game. The Gladiators, meanwhile, swept both of their first two playoff series and are looking for their second trip to the semifinal round in three years.
