VSU Golfer named All-American Scholar

VALDOSTA — For the second straight year, Valdosta State golfer Nate Anderson has been named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar by the Gulf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

Anderson was one of 57 Division II golfers to earn the honor, which is given to those golfers who have competed at least three years at the collegiate level, participated in 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds during that time, have a stroke average under 78.0 and while maintaining a minimum grade point average of 3.2.

“He is one of the most ideal golfer or student that we’ve had,” said Jared Purvis, Valdosta State Golf head coach. “He always does everything that is asked of him, he is always on time. He took his education very seriously, which is why he got this award, but at the same time he took golf very seriously. Just an ideal student athlete.”

Anderson, an Accounting major with a 3.33 grade point average, led Valdosta State with a 74.8 strokes per round average in 2012-13.

His score counted in 30.5 of Valdosta State's 32 rounds played during the year and he tallied one top five, two top 10 and five top 20 finishes.

He also earned All-GSC honors for the second straight year.

Playing a sport while maintaining a high GPA is a difficult task for a lot of student-athletes.

“In order to do it you just have to have dedication,” Purvis said. “You have to be willing to put in the time an the effort for everything, and you have to be able to balance it all. You’ve gotta understand that school and your sport come first. Until those two things are taken care of, don’t even think about going out to the bars and everything.”
