Putnam looks to stay hot in South Georgia Classic

VALDOSTA — Andrew Putnam is a name that may get pretty popular around Valdosta this week. Putnam will enter the South Georgia Classic at Kinderlou Forest as possibly the hottest competitor in the field.

Putnam has been a pro player since 2010, but he has never had a stretch as dominant as his first three rounds at WNB Golf Classic this weekend in Midland, Texas. Through three rounds Putnam has shot 20 strokes under par, good for a seven-stroke lead over the next closest competitor.

In the last tournament before next week's South Georgia Classic, Putnam has led since the opening round, shooting 66 the first two days of the event for a 12-under-par 132 at the Midland Country Club.

Putnam continued his blazing start on Saturday morning, birdying his first two holes en route to five birdies on the front nine; he followed that up with three more birdies on the back nine to put him eight under for the day.

If Putnam can avoid a meltdown today it would mark the first win of his young career.

Putnam has made five top-10 finishes during his two years and 31 events on the Web.com Tour, but three of those have come in the six events he's played in 2014.

In six 2014 events, Putnam has finished in the top 25 in the field five times, including a second-place finish at the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship.

Even in the sole missed cut of Putnam's 2014 Web.com Tour he rebounded from a 77 on Day 1 by shooting a 64 in Round 2, just barely missing the cut.

This will be Putnam's first South Georgia Classic, but if recent history has any clue, his name could be the eighth new winner in the eighth year of the SGC at Kinderlou Forest.

Before anyone ever cared where I would play basketball, I was a kid from Northeast Ohio. It’s where I walked. It’s where I ran. It’s where I cried. It’s where I bled.
