Vikette signs with Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

VALDOSTA — Friends and family of Tashia Brown gathered in the Lowndes High School gymnasium to share in one of the greatest experiences in any high school athlete’s life, Brown put pen to paper and inked a scholarship to play basketball at Western Kentucky next fall.

Brown fell in love with basketball at a young age, playing games at the park with her father and brothers. Brown made the leap to organized team ball beginning her sixth grade year at Lowndes Middle.

For years now, Brown has lived, breathed, and slept basketball as she has worked to fine-tune her game and challenge herself against the competition at higher levels.

Wednesday was a culmination of years of Brown’s work and determination as she decided that Western Kentucky was the next destination on the road to her basketball dreams.

“I’m proud and very thankful that she is going to get this opportunity, because not many do,” said Amanda Hughes, who Brown describes as a second mother to her. “I’m glad she’s able to follow her dreams. She’s stuck with the grades, she’s stuck with what she wanted to do. She knows this is what she wants to do, and she wants to go beyond college playing ball.”

The gravity of the moment was not lost on Brown who took a moment to really let it all sink in.

“It means a lot, this is a great accomplishment, I finally made it,” said Brown. “I told my family I would.”

The tried and true method of hard-work and determination is what Brown credits her scholarship to.

“Work hard and always on the court trying to get better, and trying to get my game better,” said Brown.

A huge opportunity awaits Brown as a Hilltopper, both academically and athletically, and if Brown has her way, she should look into taking some foreign language courses while at Western Kentucky.

“I would love to go play overseas,” said Brown.

No one is doubting her.
