Wildcats move to 5-1 in basketball, defeat Brooks Co. 62-54

VALDOSTA — On Saturday, the Valdosta High Wildcat boys basketball team took on the Trojans of Brooks County at home. The Wildcats came away from the game victorious with a 62-54 victory.

With the Wildcats leader Rashad Lewis out due to a shoulder injury received in Tuesday’s game against the Cook Hornets, the other members of the Wildcats were left to step up to lead the team. The shoulder injury may need surgery after results from a MRI Friday revealed a separation.

Led by Josh Norwood, the Wildcats dominated without their star player. Norwood scored 14 points, 3 steals and got 3 rebounds in the contest. Malik Rogers and Elliot Ingram gathered 10 points a piece, with Rogers adding 4 rebounds to the mix.

“With Rashad out, we had to fill the void. Norwood stepped up big for us and made some big shots,” said Wildcat Head Coach Antonio Haynes. “We have to run the team by committee now. Elliot stepped up in the 4th quarter with some big shots and Anthony Smith stepped up and played well.”

Anthony Smith stepped up for the ‘Cats with 9 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals, helping his team get more opportunities to score.

Tre Barrett added 7 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals as the Wildcats moved to 5-1 on the season.

“Im asking a lot from my guys. A lot of them have not played varsity basketball before. People will step up in the absence of Lewis however,” said Haynes.

The Wildcats will travel to Tallahassee this weekend to participate in the Capital City Classic, playing in games Friday and Saturday.

“We have to find a way to get to the wins, and I think we will,” said Haynes.
