Basketball edition of Winnersville Classic tonight

VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Wildcats and Lowndes Vikings' basketball programs will tip-off the 2014 portion of their schedule against each other in the hardcore edition of the Winnersville Classic.

The Wildcats and Vikings have both enjoyed success early in the 2013-2014 seasons, each posting eight wins before the end of December.

Valdosta is 8-2 this season despite losing star senior point guard Rashad Lewis for a few games to a shoulder injury.

Head coach Antonio Hayes' squad has alternated victories against always-tough Cook Hornets — both road teams pulling out the win — along with two dominating wins over Brooks County, both in Valdosta and Quitman.

The Wildcats come into tonight looking to avenge a 63-46 stumble against Vidalia in their last contest of 2013.

Lowndes, 8-5, began the season with three-straight victories at home before losing to the visiting Hornets, 63-45, on Nov. 26. The Vikings followed that loss with another three-game winning streak which was punctuated by victories against Brooks County home and away in consecutive games.

Like Valdosta, Lowndes stumbled in their last game of 2013, but not nearly in comparable manners.

The Vikings travelled to Ashburn the weekend after Christmas to compete in the Turner County Christmas Tournament and after an opening-day win against Stewart County, Lowndes was matched up against the hosting Turner County.

It looked as if the Vikings would be wrapping up another victory when a bench-clearing fight broke out between both teams, resulting in a double forfeit.

Lowndes head coach John Arnold will have to put the ugly incident behind quickly to get his team ready to take on the dangerous Wildcats tonight at Lowndes High.

The Lady Cats vs Vikettes game begins at 6 p.m. and the Wildcats vs Vikings is set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

Before anyone ever cared where I would play basketball, I was a kid from Northeast Ohio. It’s where I walked. It’s where I ran. It’s where I cried. It’s where I bled. It holds a special place in my heart. People there have seen me grow up. I sometimes feel like I’m their son. Their passion can be overwhelming. But it drives me. I want to give them hope when I can. I want to inspire them when I can. My relationship with Northeast Ohio is bigger than basketball. I didn’t realize that four years ago. I do now.
