It took more than seven hours for the jury to return with a guilty verdict in the Lewis Mitchell Jr. murder trial Thursday.
Deliberations began around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Lowndes County Judicial and Administrative Complex. At 1:50 p.m., Thursday, the jurors returned with the unanimous decision of guilt.
Mitchell Jr., now 21, was found guilty of one count of malice murder in the shooting death of Antonio Jermaine Mitchell, 24, one count of aggravated assault on Desmond Antonio Jones, now 24, and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Before the verdict was read, Southern Circuit Judge Richard M. Cowart warned the courtroom to refrain from outbursts. Afterwards, the courtroom was quiet, but the sigh of relief was evident in the face of Velerie May, Antonio Jermaine Mitchell’s mother. Other family members shed a few tears. A couple were seen comforting each other.
