- — The Georgia House of Representatives and Senate released lists of committee appointments at the end of the first week of the 2013 legislative session.

Sen. Tim Golden, representing South Georgia, is pleased with his appointments, he said, and hopes to use his sway in his committees to enact change for his district.

Golden was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Finance Committee, Chairman of the Insurance and Labor Committee, Secretary of the Appropriations Committee and Chairman of the Community Health subcommittee under appropriations. He was also appointed as a member of the Higher Education Committee.

Golden is most proud to be appointed to his seats on insurance and labor and community health — very influential committees, he said.

"I was pleased to say the least," Golden said. "The community health subcommittee oversees funding for hospitals and has a wide range of impact on health in the community, including Medicaid. I'll be very busy, but I'm very happy."

His work on this subcommittee will allow him influence in the Senate to address health issues and buildings in Lowndes County, such as with South Georgia Medical Center and with the Valdosta State University Health Science Building.

As Vice-Chair on the Finance Committee, Golden hopes to support technology issues and industrial growth in South Georgia, which will in turn lead to job creation in the region, he said.

In the House, representatives are assigned to at least three

committees, according to Marshall Guest, spokesman for Speaker of the House David Ralston. Representatives and senators both file requests to their respective Committees on Assignments, and are assigned based on qualifications.

"You have committees that everyone wants to serve on, but there's really only so many slots," Guest said.

Gov. Nathan Deal named Rep. Chad Nimmer to his House floor leader team in place of Rep. Amy Carter, who will now serve as Chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee, according to a press release issued Friday.

Ga. House of Representatives committee assignments:

• Rep. Ellis Black - Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, Economic Development subcommittee under Appropriations, Ways and Means, Vice-Chair of Defense and Veterans Affairs, Legislative and Congressional Reapportionment

• Rep. Amy Carter - Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, Secretary of Appropriations, Education subcommittee under Appropriations, Education,  Chairman of Governmental Affairs, Secretary of Higher Education, Small Business Development
