Ga. school board summoned by state officials

DECATUR, Ga. — The DeKalb County School Board is scheduled to meet with the Georgia Department of Education after the district was put on probation by an accreditation agency in December.

WGCL-TV (http://bit.ly/Wln9YL) reports the group will be asked to present evidence to the state department of education Jan. 17 as to why they should not be suspended. Officials will then make a recommendation to Gov. Nathan Deal, who has final say on whether members of the DeKalb County School Board should be suspended or fired.

Among other things, a Southern Association of Colleges and Schools investigation found evidence of fiscal mismanagement in the school district. The district is on probation through the end of 2013.

With over 98,000 students enrolled, the DeKalb County School District is the third largest in the state.
