VALDOSTA — Based on information released later this evening, city officials and homeless advocates are in the process of moving an encampment of homeless individuals for a second time. The move is expected to be complete Wednesday.
Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childess said the homeless individuals will be moved to an undisclosed church location. Last Wednesday, these individuals were moved from a long-time, makeshift encampment under the James Beck Ovrpass to an undisclosed, temporary location on volunteered private property in a residential neighborhood. Backlash from that neighborhood and its city representative prompted this second move.
According to city officials, they will be relocated to a new piece of property in a non-residential area discovered through a contact at Habitat for Humanity. The new area remains undisclosed to the public to avoid more homeless individuals seeking out the location and to protect the current homeless from harm.
