Kendrick Johnson rally scheduled this Saturday

VALDOSTA — Georgia State Conference of the NAACP is scheduled to join the family of Kendrick Johnson and others this weekend for a rally to demand additional investigation into the death of a 17-year-old student found dead this past January in the old Lowndes High School gym.

Last week, a second autopsy contradicted the findings of the state autopsy into Johnson’s death.

The second autopsy referred to blunt-force trauma to the teen’s neck and the death being non-accidental; the Johnson family and supporters funded this independent autopsy. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s autopsy found Johnson’s death accidental due to positional asphyxia.

The Johnson family believes foul play was involved in the teen’s death.

Last week, the federal Department of Justice said it would not proceed with an investigation into the case. The U.S. Attorney Middle District of Georgia Michael J. Moore is reviewing the case but has not initiated a formal investigation into Kendrick Johnson’s death.

The rally is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, Lowndes County Judicial Administrative Building, 327 N. Ashley St.
