VALDOSTA — At approximately 7:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, a Lowndes Middle School student was struck by a car while walking to school.

Anthony D. Harris, 13, was walking to school on Copeland Road. There is no sidewalk in the area of the road where Harris was walking; there is however a grass shoulder. He was not in a crosswalk area when he was struck.

Harris’ father, Anthony Harris, stated that he did not know his son had been struck for 30 minutes to an hour following the incident. By the time he was informed, he claimed that his son was already at the hospital.

Harris was released from the hospital with abrasions on his head, knees and stomach on Friday afternoon. According to his father, Harris is recovering and doing fine at this time.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper Shane Copeland said, the car that struck Harris was traveling below the posted speed limit and tried their best to swerve around him.

There are no charges being pressed against the driver at this time.
