City of Valdosta
The City of Valdosta released the following statement this afternoon:
On March 24, 2014, at approximately 10 a.m., a City of Valdosta Utilities Department crew located an active sewer spill south of South Blanchard Street. The spill is due to the collapse of a 21-inch sewer line.
A local contractor was contacted immediately to undertake emergency repairs and is in the process of bringing in specialty equipment including directional drilling equipment, a well pointing system and a bypass pumping system to make the necessary repairs. This emergency work is extremely complicated since the spill location is adjacent to several railroad tracks and underneath an electric transmission line.
Approximately 250 gallons per minute is being discharged to a wetland area drained by Knights Creek between South Blanchard Street and Howell Road.
The public is advised to avoid contact with Knights Creek south of Blanchard Street until normal conditions are restored. Signs warning of the major spill are being placed at public access areas downstream of the spill location.
