Explosive device in home safe prompts evacuation

SMYRNA, Ga. — Neighbors were ordered to evacuate their subdivision after relatives cleaning a man’s safe after he died made a startling discovery.

Cobb County police say the family members on Monday afternoon discovered an explosive device inside a safe in the home just northwest of Atlanta.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that a bomb squad was called to the home in the Paces Ferry Park subdivision in the Vinings area shortly before 5 p.m.

Cobb County police Officer Mike Bowman said residents within 500 feet were evacuated while investigators determined how to remove the device. WXIA-TV reports that they were able to remove and safely detonate it.

It wasn’t immediately known what type of explosive device was found.

WSB-TV reports that residents were allowed to return to their homes around 11 p.m.
