I-75 traffic stop turns up more than $100K in treasury checks

VALDOSTA — A Secret Service and Lowndes County Sheriff Department inquiry into a bundle of U.S. Treasury checks discovered during a traffic stop on Wednesday (April 24) determined them to be stolen or fraudulent, according to sheriff’s office reports.

Sheriff’s deputies discovered the checks after they stopped a northbound vehicle on Interstate 75 for a window tint violation and conducted a search on the automobile, reports stated.

The 126 checks totaled $107,610 and were made payable to different individuals for varying amounts, reports stated.

Craig Koonce, 37, of Bradenton, Fla., Eric Neri, 37, of Jesup, Ga., and Keith Brooks, 44, of Bradenton, Fla., were all charged with multiple counts of theft by receiving stolen property and were transported to the Lowndes County Jail, reports stated. Additional charges were pending further investigation.
