Lowndes Middle student charged in school fire

VALDOSTA — Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine has released the following;

On Wednesday afternoon around 2:00, deputies and firefighters from Lowndes County Fire Rescue responded to Lowndes Middle School, at 2379 Copeland Road, for a fire in a bathroom. The firefighters quickly arrived and extinguished the blaze which was contained to a trash can in a boy’s bathroom. The bathroom sustained minimal smoke damage. Classes resumed after a short time later.

During the investigation of the fire, an eleven {11} year old student was identified and during interviews it was learned that the student had set the fire based on the dare of another student.

The juvenile, whose name will not be released, has been charged with Arson in the second degree and has been referred to the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice. This investigation is ongoing and additional arrest may be possible.

  • Commercial driver training program expanding
