Lowndes deputies make arrest on gang charge

VALDOSTA — The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office issued the following statement today:

On Thursday afternoon around 4:00, Investigators with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, Special Operations Division and the F.B.I. Southwest Georgia Gang Task Force arrested Ernest Pete after a brief, slow speed vehicle chase that was initiated due to Pete having warrants for his arrest issued in both Lowndes County and Fulton County, Georgia.

(A man) was spotted on East Ann Street and investigators attempted to perform a traffic stop, he fled and was eventually stopped in the 700 block of East Park Avenue where he exited the vehicle and brandished a firearm toward the deputies. (He) attempted to flee on foot but was quickly arrested which forced him to drop the handgun, a .25 caliber semi-automatic.

Following his arrest and during a search ..., investigators located a quantity of marijuana which was seized. Pete was transported to the Lowndes County Jail where he still remains.

(The suspect) has previously been documented as the local gang leader of the Gangster Disciples organization. Investigators will be working with the United States Attorney’s Office in Macon seeking Federal prosecution of Ernest Pete.

Pete is charged with Battery Possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Aggravated assault, Violation of Georgia Street Gang Terrorism Act, Obstruction of an officer, Possession of firearm during the commission of a crime, Various traffic charges.
