VALDOSTA — Following heart surgery in March, Dannette Nitschke took a job with Jerry Mercer Physical Therapy.

Her co-workers quickly became friends and are now trying to help the Echols County resident with her latest health issue.

Nitschke needs surgery to remove a tumor from her abdomen. Though insured, the tumor is considered part of a pre-existing condition and is not covered in her policy, Nitschke says.

To help her pay for the surgery, Nitschke’s co-workers sponsor a fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 6.

From 7 a.m.-noon Saturday, at Jerry Mercer Physical Therapy, 2900-A N. Oak St., co-workers sponsor a yard sale and car wash with all proceeds to benefit the surgery to remove the tumor scheduled for Oct. 15.

“There’s truck loads of items being sold from surround sound, tools, beds, clothes of all sizes, shoes, home decor,” according to organizers. “We would like to encourage the community to come out and support this cause.”

The car wash will be held in the business’ North Oak Street parking lot.

Born in Mobile, Nitschke has lived in the Valdosta area for the past 20 years. She was a 2003 Eagle graduate from Valdosta Technical College, which is now Wiregrass Georgia Technical.

She is married to Michael Nitschke. She has one daughter, Katelynne, 15, who attends Echols County High School.

Though she has only worked at Jerry Mercer for about six months, Dannette Nitschke says she considers her co-workers “like family. It is amazing how good they have been to me.”

Debi Chamberlin and Lindsey Blakelay of Jerry Mercer have led the fundraiser. The business will also accept donations next week to help Nitschke.
