Civitans welcome community

VALDOSTA — Valdosta Civitan Club members extend an open invitation to community residents to be a guest and learn about the organization. The Civitans meet at noon on the second and fourth Wednesdays each month, Ole’ South Country Buffet, St. Augustine Road.

Civitan is a coined word that comes from the Latin word Civitas, which means citizenship. Civitan International was founded in March 17, 1917, in Birmingham, Ala., by a group of business and professional men with a desire to contribute to the improvement of the community.

Civitan is an association of community service clubs. The aim is building good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization of clubs dedicated to serving individual and community needs with emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.

Civitan International designated April as Civitan Awareness Month. Mayor John Gayle issued a proclamation designating April as Civitan Awareness Month. Chartered on September 16, 1957, with 25 members, the Valdosta Civitan Club has been active for almost 57 years.
