Valdosta State University Music Department’s Wind Ensemble and Lowndes High School’s Wind Symphony present a joint concert, 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 21, Whitehead Auditorium, VSU Fine Arts Building, corner of Oak and Brookwood.
The Lowndes Wind Symphony will present a variety of music, including selections which the group performed during a recent Bainbridge concert festival. Of special interest will be a movement of a contemporary marimba concerto with soloist Dr. Jeff Grant, the new percussion instructor in the Lowndes band program.
The VSU Wind Ensemble will perform several programmatic works, including the American premiere of three animated films with band accompaniment, and works depicting the life of Anne Frank, as well as the exploits of Ghengis Khan.
Both bands will combine to bring the concert to an exciting close with an arrangement of “America, the Beautiful.”
“The whole community gets to see the Bridgemen every Friday night throughout the fall, but many have no idea what goes on in the classroom for the remaining six months,” according to VSU Music. “In concert groups, such as the Wind Symphony, performing skills are enhanced, and students really make great strides in their playing ability. This concert showcases the musical progress achieved through this academic year.”
Admission to the concert is free. It will also webcast live. Go to www.valdosta.edu/music and click on “Performance Videos” on the right side. Then on the bottom of the list, click “LiveEvents.”
