Three injured in shooting near Tifton hospital

TIFTON, Ga. — A shooting in the parking lot across the street from Tift Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Room on the corner of Lee Avenue and 20th Street Friday afternoon resulted in three people being injured, two of whom were federal agents with the U.S. Marshals Service, according to authorities.

Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough couldn’t release any details Friday evening but said no one was killed in the shooting. He said two federal agents with the U.S. Marshals Service received non-life threatening injuries and were treated and released from the hospital.

He said the other individual injured was a female who was driving “the car in question.”

Two suspects, including the injured female, are in custody, Scarbrough said.

He released the following statement Friday evening on Facebook: “In regards to the TRMC shooting, please be advised that there is no threat to the area as the suspects are in custody. There were shots fired, but no one killed. The GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) is the lead investigative agency on this case. I realize that this information is sketchy, but that’s all I can release at this time. Please be patient as we sort things out.”

The sheriff said several agencies responded to the scene, including the Tift County Sheriff’s Office, Tifton Police Department, GBI, Georgia State Patrol, U.S. Marshals Service and Federal Bureau of Investigation.

TRMC released the following statement Friday evening on their Facebook page: “Tift Regional Medical Center called a Code Silver at 3:24 p.m. Friday, which means a security incident occurred on hospital property. For the safety of our patients, visitors and staff, the hospital was placed on automatic lockdown. The all-clear was called at 4:28 p.m. The incident occurred on TRMC property, but not within the hospital, and did not involve TRMC patients, visitors or employees. The incident involved a shooting between two law enforcement personnel and an individual in the parking lot across the street from the Emergency Room on the corner of Lee Avenue and 20th Street. Three victims are currently being treated in the Emergency Room. Again, no TRMC patients, visitors or staff were involved or were injured. The area has been secured by law enforcement and officers Dennis Reese and Chad Davis with the Tift County Sheriff’s Department have declared the scene safe.”
