U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone, D-Minn., was killed in the crash of a private plane in northern Minnesota along with his wife, Sheila, daughter Marcia and five others, a week and a-half before Election Day; he was 58. Actor Richard Harris died in London at age 72.

President George W. Bush visited Southern California, telling residents weary from five days of wildfires: “We’re not going to forget you in Washington, D.C.” The Boston Red Sox beat the Colorado Rockies 2-1 at Fenway to take a 2-0 World Series lead.

One year ago

Deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, his son Muatassim and former Defense Minister Abu Bakr Younis were buried at dawn in a secret location, five days after Gadhafi was slain by revolutionary fighters.
