Ga. woman arrested at Fla. beach community condo

VERO BEACH, Fla. — A Georgia woman wanted in the beating of her ex-boyfriend and recently featured on ‘America’s Most Wanted’ was arrested at her current boyfriend’s condominium in a Florida beach community, authorities said.

Karen Lynn King, 52, was taken into custody near Vero Beach on Saturday and charged with kidnapping and assault with the intent to kill, The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office said.

A caller tipped the sheriff’s office to King’s whereabouts, Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers reported. Detectives conducted surveillance on her boyfriend’s home. They approached him when he left to walk a dog and he confirmed she was inside the condo. She was arrested without incident and is awaiting extradition to Georgia. It was not immediately clear whether she had a lawyer.

King called her longtime, on-again-off-again boyfriend Lyndon Baine Smith to her home on March 3, 2012, saying she was having trouble with Smith’s son, who lived with her, said Lt. Jamie Gianfala of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia. While at King’s home, Smith was attacked by five men, including two who are his sons, Gianfala said.

The men beat Smith unconscious and put him in a car trunk to drive him to Alabama to get rid of him, Gianfala said. Soon after the vehicle crossed the state line, a sheriff’s deputy stopped it for following too closely behind a tractor trailer and discovered Smith in the trunk during a search of the vehicle, Gianfala said.

“He probably saved that man’s life,” Gianfala said.

Gianfala described the attack on Smith as vicious and said Smith was left with fluid on his brain, wounds to his face, broken bones, lost vision in one eye and was in a coma for two days. The attack was motivated by money problems and other family issues, he said.

All five men accused in the attack have been arrested, Gianfala said. Two are currently in jail, while the other three were released after posting bond.
