VALDOSTA — Valdosta’s City Council approved bids for police department vehicles and approved the fire department to apply for grants with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security at their meeting Thursday evening.

The Valdosta Fire Department is applying for grants to assist them in purchasing a driving simulator and the requisite software, a live fire extinguisher training system and a new fire safety house.

The winning bids for police vehicles—one midsize SUV, 10 rear wheel drive pursuit vehicles and four rear wheel drive pursuit vehicles for police administration—all came from Cass Burch at $28,770, $228, 970 and $88,780, respectively.

The council also approved a resolution to temporally add sections of Clay Road and East Savannah Avenue to the State Highway System as State Route 1270 during the construction and realignment of Clay Road with Hollywood Street.

Once started, the construction is planned to be finished by July 2015.
