Ga. woman faces sentencing in toddler’s death

The Associated Press

ATLANTA — Fulton County prosecutors say a woman who ran an unlicensed daycare has been convicted in the death of an 11-month-old boy.

District Attorney’s spokeswoman Yvette Jones said Wednesday that 44-year-old Maria Owens was convicted of murder, aggravated assault and child cruelty in the death of 11-month-old Jaylen Kelly.

Officials say Owens ran a daycare out of her home in Fairburn, where Kelly was found unresponsive June 1, 2011.

When questioned by investigators, Jones says Owens told them she hit Kelly a few times on the side to clear up a cough.

Medical professionals testified that Kelly suffered a very hard bow to his back that caused internal bleeding and left him with a fractured spine.

Owens’ sentencing is set for today in Fulton County Superior Court.
