Valdosta State University Art awarded its top prizes earlier this week for the 26th Annual Valdosta National juried art competition.
Each year, VSU seeks artists from as near as Lowndes County to as far as across the United States for the Valdosta National.
This year, 61 artists entered 166 works with jurist Carolyn Henne selecting 59 works representing 35 artists to include in the show. Henne is a sculptor and the department chair of Florida State University Art. She is also associate dean of the College of Visual Arts, Theater and Dance.
Julie Bowland, VSU Fine Arts Gallery director, announced the winners of the exhibit’s top prizes.
First Place: Matt Mitros of Tuscaloosa, Ala. won the top prize of $450 for his multi-media ceramic, aluminum and wood work.
Second Place: Mike Huffman of Lima, Ohio, won a $350 prize for his oil, “Romance Novel, Hood Series.”
Third Place: Nathan Tavas of Columbia City, Ind., won a $300 prize for his oil, “Extreme Gravity.”
Fourth Place: Pat Kumicich of Naples, Fla., won a $200 prize for his work, “Weighing In On Fast Food.”
Honorable Mentions (awarded $100 each): Elizabeth McFalls of Columbus for her graphite piece, “Tire Rod,” and Christina Renfer Vogel of Chattanooga, Tenn., for his oil “Brandon with Yellow Shirt.”
Valdosta National 2014 runs through Feb. 8, VSU Fine Arts Gallery, VSU Fine Arts Building, corner of Oak and Brookwood.
