Driver faces new charges in VSU pedestrian death

VALDOSTA — The driver of the truck that struck a Valdosta State University student in a crosswalk last week has turned himself in to authorities after charges were filed in her death, according to the Valdosta Police Department.

Michael Laslie, 21, has been charged with homicide by vehicle in the second degree, a misdemeanor offense, for the Feb. 5 traffic accident which led to the death of Elizabeth “Lizzie” Lohmar, a 21-year-old VSU student, police reports stated. An arrest warrant was issued Monday, and Laslie turned himself into the Lowndes County Jail Tuesday morning, reports stated.

A black Chevrolet Silverado turned left onto North Patterson from  East College Street where it struck Lohmar, according to the Valdosta Police Department.

Laslie was originally charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, reports stated.

Lohmar, a mathematics major from Lawrenceville, died as a result of her injuries Saturday.

A funeral mass will be held for Lohmar at 11 a.m. today, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 800 Gornto Road.
