Arson attempt at Valdosta schools building

VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Fire Department is investigating a Monday evening arson attempt at the Valdosta City Schools Board of Education building.

At about 9:56 p.m., the fire department was dispatched to the board of education building at 1204 Williams Street in reference to a suspicious canister leaning against the building, according to Lt. Edgar Tooley, fire inspector.

Investigators on scene discovered a small acetylene welding tank with the valve open. The tank did not have a wick, and no damage was done to the building.

“If it had a wick, some damage could have been done,” said Tooley, “But it did not create a hazard.”

The tank was removed from the scene, emptied and placed in storage, said Tooley.

Investigators are looking into the incident and are asking anyone with information to call the fire department at (229) 333-1835.
