The family of a Lowndes High School student found dead in a rolled-up wrestling mat reportedly filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the county school system, according to late night reports from CNN.
The Times could not independently verify the report late Tuesday night, but the family of Kendrick Johnson reportedly filed suit claiming the Lowndes County School System was negligent in protecting the 17-year-old student.
The lawsuit "alleges that Lowndes County Board of Education was negligent and violated Johnson's constitutional right to equal protection based on race," according to CNN.
Johnson was found dead in the high school's old gymnasium in January 2013. A state autopsy claimed the death accidental. The Johnson family believes their son died of foul play and funded a second autopsy which found the death to be non-accidental.
The U.S. Attorney's office is conducting an ongoing review of the death.
