Police warn of thieves targeting used cooking oil

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — A metro Atlanta restaurant owner says he’s buying a lock for his containers of used cooking oil after catching a woman siphoning grease from them.

WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/WRXyd6 ) reports police in Sandy Springs are investigating and say rising oil prices have led to similar thefts in the area.

Restaurant owner Ertan Makara told the television station the woman pretended to work for a grease recycling company. Makara recalled a letter from his recycling company warning of similar thefts throughout metro Atlanta and asked the woman for identification.

Makara says the woman fled with about $100 in used cooking oil.

Police Capt. Steve Rose told the television station recycling companies pay for used cooking oil to turn it into alternative fuel.
