Man, 86, indicted in fatal Ga. hospital shooting

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Ga — An 86-year-old man is being indicted in the slaying of his wife’s nephew at an Augusta hospital.

District Attorney’s officials told the Augusta Chronicle (http://bit.ly/VTuqkR ) a grand jury has returned indictments against Charles Gorrell on charges of felony murder, malice murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Police say the shooting likely stemmed from a dispute between Gorrell and his 59-year-old nephew Tim Grooms, who had power of attorney over Gorrell’s wife. Police say Grooms was fatally shot inside his aunt’s hospital room Oct. 16. The woman was hospitalized with pneumonia.

Gorrell was released on bond and the newspaper reports he is wearing an ankle monitor and is staying with his son in Columbia.

It is not yet clear when Gorrell will go to trial.
