Pair charged over false robbery report

VALDOSTA — Valdosta police have arrested and charged two men who allegedly lied about being robbed at gunpoint.

Shortly after midnight Wednesday morning, police responded to the 900 block of Blanton Street after receiving a call that an individual had been robbed by two black males wearing ski masks and brandishing handguns, according to reports.

The individual who made the report, Jarvis Edwards, 23, stated that the assailants took a set of keys, five dollars in cash and a Galaxy S3 cell phone valued at $350.

During the investigation, officers interviewed Edwards and Willie Rowe, 19, an individual who claimed to have been present during the robbery.

Edwards and Rowe were interviewed separately and gave different accounts of the incident. After it became apparent to investigators that a robbery did not occur, both men were taken into custody, according to Capt. Bobbi McGraw.

Edwards was charged with making false statements, a felony offense. Rowe was charged with obstruction of a law enforcement officer, a misdemeanor.

Edwards and Rowe are currently in the Lowndes County Jail and are not eligible for bail.
