UPDATE: City school board case not attempted arson

VALDOSTA — An incident previously reported by The Times as an attempted arson at the Valdosta City Schools Board of Education building has been determined not to be an attempted arson.

The incident took place at about 9:56 p.m. Monday when a resident who lives close to the building at 1204 Williams St. called 911 to report that she heard a hissing sound coming from a canister that she saw an individual toss against the wall of the building, reports stated.

Lt. Edgar Tooley with the Valdosta Fire Department investigated the incident and determined that the canister was a small acetylene welding tank with an open valve. Tooley removed the tank from the scene and continued to investigate.

At no point did the fire or police departments consider the incident an attempted arson but investigated it as suspicious activity.
