The City of Valdosta hosts a groundbreaking ceremony for the new $32 million Force Main Project this week.
At 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, city officials will hold the ceremony at the future site of the new Withlacoochee Wastewater Treatment Plant, on Wetherington Lane.
The Valdosta mayor and council awarded the construction contract to Garney Construction, on April 24, which includes the construction of a 6.2-mile force main (that will replace the existing 54-inch gravity sewer main that runs alongside the Withlacoochee River), a series of new pump stations, and a new headworks structure and 6-million gallon flow equalization basin to be located at the site of the new WWTP, according to the city.
This project provides the first groundwork for the relocation of the wastewater treatment plant, and the Valdosta mayor and council are expected to consider the contract for the design build project for the new plant at the June 19 Valdosta City Council meeting.
City officials will speak briefly prior to the ceremonial groundbreaking activity. Also in attendance will be representatives from Garney Construction and representatives from Parsons, with whom the city contracted for the design of the force main project.
