Auditions planned for ‘Charlotte’s Web’

VALDOSTA — Gingerbread Players of Theatre Guild Valdosta will look for Wilbur and others to play the beloved barnyard characters in the stage adaptation of “Charlotte’s Web.”

Charlotte is a kindly barn spider who saves the life of her friend, Wilbur, a young pig. The play is Joseph Robinette’s adaptation of E.B. White’s beloved children’s book.

Organizers seek youngsters ages 6 and up, as well as adults to audition for this show; however, Gingerbread Players is the Guild’s children’s theatrical company. Some adults may be needed for older roles, but young people will be cast first where available, said Brenda Brunston, the show’s producer.

Those auditioning should bring a small photographic headshot to include with registration forms. The forms will ask parents to provide any potential rehearsal conflicts during the next two months. Those auditioning should be prepared to read from the script.

Roles include Charlotte, a wise, extraordinarily gifted spider (female); Wilbur, a runt of a pig in need of a “miracle” (male); Templeton, a greedy rat (male); Goose (female); Gander (male); Sheep, old and matter-of-fact; Lamb, younger and outspoken; Fern Arable, a young farm girl (pre- to early teen) not quite ready to give up childhood; John Arable, sensible farmer and father of Fern and Avery; Martha Arable, farm wife and mother of Fern and Avery; Avery Arable, attention-seeking brother of Fern (early to mid-teen); Homer Zuckerman, farmer, older uncle of Fern and Avery; Edith Zuckerman, farm wife, older aunt of Fern and Avery; Lurvy, somewhat comical hired hand on the Zuckerman farm; Chorus (of cats ... no singing required), males or females to “spin” the story; Uncle, slightly arrogant large pig (male); Spiders, three of Charlotte's babies (female); Announcer, robust-voiced fair announcer (male); Reporter, newspaper reporter; Photographer, newspaper photographer; Spectators\Judges\Fairgoers, males and females.

Lois Allbritton will direct “Charlotte’s Web.” This is her second directing job with Gingerbread Players; she has served as assistant director for several past shows. Bethanie Bass is this show’s assistant director.

Performance dates are scheduled for March 21-23, 28-30.
