DeKalb County schools on probation through 2013

The Associated Press

ATLANTA — An accreditation agency has placed the DeKalb County School District on probation, citing long-term leadership issues after a six-month investigation.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Monday (http://bit.ly/VLOLWr ) reported the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools found evidence of fiscal mismanagement and school board members influencing which schools athletes chose to attend.

The district has not lost accreditation, but has been placed on probation until Dec. 31, 2013.

Lillian Govus, a spokeswoman, says the school district will work collaboratively to review findings of the investigation, and will address issues that led to the district being put on probation.

The state school board will also discuss the findings within 30 days.

With over 98,000 students enrolled, the DeKalb County School District is the third largest in Georgia.
