Ga. school district may face federal scrutiny

ATLANTA — The Georgia Board of Education announced it wants federal authorities to take a closer look at how the Dougherty County School System manages federal funding.

The Albany Herald Monday (http://bit.ly/UcbolB ) reported state education officials scolded the district over how it managed $6 million in Title 1 funds. The money is intended to assist disadvantaged students.

State education officials put a hold on as much as $15 million in federal funding and have asked the U.S. Inspector General’s office for help.

Officials say the district’s financial management will likely be scrutinized for the next five years.
