Ga. police officer shot during traffic stop

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police in Alpharetta say an officer has been hospitalized after being shot during a traffic stop and the suspect was fatally shot by police after a pursuit through north Fulton County.

Department spokesman George Gordon says the officer stopped a truck for a tag violation and the driver — an unidentified man — opened fire on the officer, wounding him in his abdomen.

The man fled the scene and was pursued by Alpharetta and Roswell police. Gordon says the man eventually crashed, got out of his car and shot at responding officers.

Gordon says police returned fire and killed the man. It was unclear where he was wounded.

Gordon says four police cars were struck by gunfire, and the officer is hospitalized in stable condition at North Fulton Medical Hospital.
