Local gospel singer Alfred Hawkins’ new song, “Ooh My Jesus,” is available for download free at www.myspace.com/jjcmhq.
The new song is a follow up to his gospel CD, “Seek The Love, Another Varitee.”
Hawkins explained that God led his heart from R &B to inspirational music after a four-year sabbatical.
“With this album, I hope to inspire the young, old and young-at-heart as I was inspired,” he said.
He said at this point in his career, serving God is more important than how many albums he sells. Hawkins said God has always blessed him with the gift to produce great music, but only the lyrics have changed since he has changed.
Hawkins readily admits that he’s not perfect and he’s “a work in progress,” but he feels he can share his lessons learned through his music with people who are going through some of experiences he has been through.
He gives all the glory to God for his musical gifts.
"Music to me is a way of connecting with society," he explained. "The music within me is a way of expressing my true inner thoughts and feelings. My music is a way of sending a message to the young, old and young at heart."
Hawkins has been singing since he was three years old and his father was also a musician who played guitar.
"I chose gospel music because it captures the listener whether it's with music or without and I can immobilize the listener with the reality of the song," he said.
Hawkins said he has learned much about the business side of the music industry over the years. Eventually, he would like to start a non-profit organization in Americus where young people will have a medium to express their artistic talents.
"A creative mind can go a long way and young people need to explore their creative side," he said.
